WELCOME

The mission of Our Lady of Good Counsel School, a Catholic parish elementary school established in the Augustinian tradition, is to foster the formation of the whole child according to the message of salvation as proclaimed by the Catholic Church.  As a Catholic educational institution we strive to help children acquire the skills of the 21st century and instill in them the virtues and habits of mind and heart required for service to others.  We strive to accomplish this through the teaching of doctrine, the Sacraments, daily prayer, and an appreciation of the Scriptures.  We hope to enable children to address the business of living in their world responsibly through the development of a Christian conscience.  We believe that:
  •  We are dedicated to creating an environment that is based upon treating   every child, teacher, and parent with dignity, respect, and Christian love.
  • Our purpose is to instill the virtues of faith, hope, and love in every child.
  • Our Lady of Good Counsel School develops the child spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, physically, socially, and culturally.
    • Service to others and a sense of responsibility is vital.
    • All children entrusted to our care will have a better knowledge of themselves, their community, and the Lord.
    • Through daily prayer, monthly liturgies, seasonal prayer services, and  liturgical practices our Catholic faith community will grow.

     A LETTER FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

    Dear OLGC families,

It truly feels like yesterday when we were saying our goodbyes at the end of the year carnival.  What a great day that was, and a special thanks goes out to Mrs. Papas and the HSA board for organizing such a fun event.

I would also like to warmly welcome Fr. Ambrose to our school family.  His welcome letter is attached in this email.  Many of the children were fortunate to meet Fr. Ambrose before school ended, and I am confident that many of you have met him at church.  We look forward to Fr. Ambrose’s first school mass on Friday, September 23rd.   All are welcome to attend.

Our new school year will officially begin on Thursday, September 8th.  This will be a half day, with no bus service.  The next day, Friday the 9th, will be a full day, with bus service.  Our brand new lunch program will begin on Monday, September 12th.  Please remember that all registration, selection of meals, and payment is to be done online.  Lunches will not be available for purchase at school.  After care will also begin on the 12th.

The mandatory parent meetings will be held on Thursday, September 8th (grades 5-8) and Monday, September 12th (grades preK-4) at 7:30 pm in the auditorium.  After the meeting, you will be able to visit your child’s classroom and meet the teacher.

For your planning purposes, please note that on Wednesday, September 28th , the Archdiocese of New York is hosting a conference for all teachers and administrators.  As a result, school is closed that day.

Official registration for the drama program will be held on Tuesday, September 13th.  The performance is scheduled for June 2nd and June 3rd.  Additionally, there is still time to sign up for instrumental music lessons.  Many have already registered, and we would love to have a full orchestra.  If interested, please call the SI Conservatory of Music at (718)720-5354 to register your child.

Finally, please note the changes to the uniform that were announced at the May HSA meeting.  Summer uniform includes walking shorts and short sleeve, banded golf shirts with WHITE sneakers (a blue/black stripe is acceptable) and white socks.  If pants, jumper or skirt is worn, school shoes must also be worn.  Dyed hair, ‘faux hawks’, and carved designs are forbidden.  When students move into winter uniform, the golf shirt will no longer be permitted.

I look forward to the start of another excellent year at OLGC.  May our mother, Mary, continue to watch over us and bless us.  Enjoy the remainder of your summer!

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Hynes
